Peridot is August's birthstone and the gem designated for the 16th wedding anniversary. Peridot is said to bring healing and vitality to the whole body, to increase patience, confidence and assertiveness. The peridot gemstone is of a green color that is special among all gemstones and it has been said that it "shimmers like damp moss in the fall sunshine". Peridot was also given the name of the "seaman's emerald" since seafarers had brought it as a valuable gift to Europe.
